Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University- KVASU came into existence on 14th June, 2010, as per Ordinance number 44/2010 and later Act 3/2011 of the Government of Kerala. The University hence is the product of continuous and genuine pursuit and sustained dream of many a people, who initiated the efforts since the mid-nineties. The establishment is also the result of the recognition of the need to advance animal production sector activities and to widen the arena of academic opportunities, applied research and entrepreneurship in the field of animal health, production and allied subjects. The University is a public funded University with headquarters at Pookode, Wayanad, and the powers of the University are vested in its authorities –the Management Council and the Board of Management.

During the last ten years Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University- KVASU has carried out pioneering work in the areas of academics, research, entrepreneurship and allied activities. In addition to the nurture of two existent faculties namely Veterinary Sciences and Dairy Technology, the University initiated the Faculty of Poultry Science also to promote the education and enterprise in the Poultry Sector. Presently there are eight constituent colleges and an Academic Staff College undertaking academic, research and extension activities. This is yet another leap from just three colleges in 2010. Moreover with just less than 600 students in 2010, the University has shown impressive growth by enhancing student opportunity to around 3000 students at present with an annual intake of 600 students in a portfolio of 40 different academic programmes including distant learning programmes.

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University- KVASU has attracted and invested in more than Rs.400 crores during the past one decade in infrastructure leading to a rapid and tremendous institutional development. State of the art buildings such as the Dr. K. R. Narayanan Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex and the Dr. Verghese Kurien Institute of Dairy and Food Technology stand high among them. The University has explored productive academic and training collaborations with reputed academic institutions in India and abroad, most notably, University of Edinburgh, University of Western Australia, University of Connecticut, University of Minnesota, Indian Council for Agricultural Research, etc..

Another most satisfying and rewarding achievement during this decade was the recruitment of Assistant Professors undertaken in the long persistent vacancies in various faculties, thereby leading to the enrolment of more than 110 of Assistant Professors across thirty different disciplines. It is worth-mentioning that recruitment of more Assistant Professors and promotions of faculty is being implemented on a regular basis paving way to faculty strength. Deputation of faculty for faculty development programmes, orientation and refresher courses and management trainings have only enriched the knowledge and skill of our teachers

It is remarkable to note that there are five NABL accredited laboratories in the University, which are equipped with high-tech facilities and high-end equipment, utilising the fund of EFC from the ICAR. The NABARD RIDF sponsored referral, analytical and diagnostic laboratory, an upcoming project of the University undoubtedly will be a jewel in the crown. University is extending its activities through various research stations, farms, schools and research and extension centres located at various parts of Kerala. Public is offered various services of the University through these facilities.

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has initiated the establishment of start-ups enabling students to proceed with their schemes. Teaching is focused on a problem based learning approach rather than lecture centric, with stress on market driven education and skill development courses. The University runs a scientific publication ‘Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences’ which is publishing original research articles in the field of veterinary and animal sciences and dairy technology. It is a pride to the university that the journal is improving int its ranking and rating by various agencies year by year.The pursuit to a world class university, KVASU has bagged Kerala Governor’s Emerging Young University consecutively for three times (2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19). This marks major milestones in path of this young university with headquarters at Pookode, Wayanad, and the powers of the University are vested in its authorities –the Management Council and the Board of Management.
